Launch of virtual nursing initiative will use spatial artificial intelligence to prevent and detect falls.

Peoria, Illinois, April 17, 2025 — VirtuSense Technologies, a leading provider of sensor-based technology solutions for healthcare, announced its solutions will be a key collaborator with Emory Healthcare’s virtual nursing initiative to assist clinicians in caring for patients and preventing falls. VirtuSense’s VSTOne solution will be utilized across several Emory Healthcare locations to enable virtual nursing integrated with Epic MyChart Bedside TV and AI-powered fall prevention.

This strategic launch introduces new remote care technology that enables nurses to monitor, assess, and support patients from a distance without being physically present. Through telehealth, nurses can handle tasks like admissions paperwork, medication management, patient education, and discharge—all virtually.

“We want nurses to have the ability to spend more time with patients at the bedside, and less time charting and monitoring behind a computer. By using 3D spatial intelligence, VSTOne provides time for nurses to prevent a fall instead of reacting after it has happened; that’s our goal,” said Deepak Gaddipati, Founder and Chief Technology Officer at VirtuSense. “We are proud to collaborate with health systems like Emory Healthcare that are committed to enhancing patient care and making the hospital room of the future a reality.”

“We want to empower our nursing teams with ambient and augmentative technology to help them best care for our hospitalized patients,” says Alistair Erskine, MD, enterprise chief information and digital officer at Emory Healthcare and Emory University in a press release published by Emory. “This AI-augmented platform extends beyond better nursing workflow and supportive AI, as the technology can also be leveraged for other virtual care needs like clinical consults, medical interpretation and family visits.”

Emory University Hospital Midtown is the first Emory Healthcare hospital to deploy VirtuSense’s VSTOne. Powered by LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology in patient rooms, VSTOne tracks movement that may indicate a fall risk, alerting the care team up to 30 seconds in advance. This software, powered by AI, also supports virtual nurses by continuously monitoring patient data to detect early signs of deterioration or emergencies, enabling timely alerts to the bedside care team. VSTOne’s virtual nursing tools also allow care staff to call directly into patient rooms seamlessly to expedite admission, discharge, and general documentation, allowing on-site nurses to focus on active patient care.

“In a fast-paced hospital environment, the VirtuSense solution will help to enhance patient care through spatial intelligence, including monitoring patients in their hospital rooms to prevent falls and notifying nurses of any concerns, while the virtual nurses provide education and reduce documentation burden,” said Jason Atkins, MBI, RN-BC, vice president and chief clinical informatics officer for Emory Healthcare. “By leveraging virtual nursing in a hospital setting, we believe it will be a game changer in enhancing patient safety and the patient experience while boosting job satisfaction for nurses.”

Emory Hillandale Hospital is currently implementing virtual nursing technology via telehealth on one of its inpatient floors, with LIDAR technology slated to follow soon. Future plans include using VSTOne’s monitoring for pressure injury prevention, as well as broader telehealth connectivity.

“Emory excels at rolling out technology strategies. Their robust Project Management and Change Management processes ensure the seamless integration of new technologies into existing workflows. The key to their success lies in their deep understanding of each technology.” Qijuan Zhang, Vice President of Client Excellence at VirtuSense, commented about working with Emory to get VSTOne systems installed and up and running at Emory Hillandale, “They thoroughly digest it and effectively incorporate it into their internal ecosystem.”

Altogether, the VirtuSense solution will be deployed across eight inpatient units—totaling 1,000 beds—at several Emory Healthcare hospitals this year.
